This past weekend was slower for us than usual because Claude was
completely off. We went to the movies on Friday night and to a barbeque/lakehouse gathering with his department for most of the day Saturday. Sunday morning we visited another church and then came back to eat hamburgers and potato salad (that we picked up at Fresh Market on the way home) for lunch, yum! It's been a bit of a cloudy/overcast couple of days so it seemed very conducive to an afternoon of reading. [I actually read 2 "for fun" books over the weekend so hopefully I'm on track to pulling out of the lazy slump I've been in when it comes to reading in the past couple of years.] As the day drew to a close though, Claude had a great idea. We'd play a little chess after dinner. It's been a couple of months since we've played and I think that he-as a former president of the chess club at Jackson Prep-thought that would definitely give him an even greater edge to quickly defeating me. Right? Well here's a glance at check-mate from our first match:

Well, looks like he surely accomplished his feat of soundly beating me. 1 king trapped by 4 pawns, 1 rook, 1 knight, 1 bishop, the queen, and king.
Except for the fact that those 9 black pieces belonged not to Claude, but to me:)
I must say that I was pretty thrilled with my playing that round. But there was of course a rematch which ended this way:

Thus, Claude did come back to avenge his earlier loss. Technically our record was tied 1-1. However I think the first game was definitely the one I would have rather won:)
So for Claude this past Sunday night, it turns out that Bobby Fischer he was not...Maybe next time!
